Lazy Post no. 16: Tangerine Dream @ Coventry Cathedral…

I suspect most of you will be at a loss to understand my excitement at finding this video, but that’s not going to stop me writing about it. Besides as Radio 6 have been telling me all week, it would have been Robert Moog’s 80th Birthday today, so an analogue celebration of some kind is only to be expected…

This wonderfully archaic gem from 1975 is a recording of something that I didn’t even know had happened, which is a surprise really as it combines two of my most favorite things, post war architecture and analogue electronica…

The performance consists of three beardy men with long hair sitting almost stationary in front of banks of complex looking machines, carefully monitoring their output and making small tweaks accordingly. Luckily for those who like things more racey, this rather static premise is inter-cut with visual fades and panning shots of the Cathedral and its surroundings which really helps bring the preformance alive…

But wait, there’s more,… To ratchet the excitement up even higher, various special visual effects are blended in, which to the jaded eyes of the middle aged might best be described as shonky, whereas to the critcal eyes of today’s youth, I can’t imagine them being described as anything other than crap…

And what are those Tangerine Men actually doing? Their fingers and hands don’t seem to match the wonderful noises on the video (which it has to be said sounds exactly the same as the live Ricochet album) and to cap it all they don’t even look like they’re enjoying it very much…  Which is a shame as they’re making what was then cutting edge electronic music in one of the most beautiful buildings in England…

Anyway, thanks to whoever found it and put it up on YouTube, much appreciated…
