Kilpeck Church, Hereford

Was very impressed when I saw this little church on TV last night.

Founded in 1140 on the site of a previous Saxon church, Kilpeck Church is a wonderful example of the romanesque with its rounded arches and simple structure. Although the identity of the builders is unknown, their skill and ability to carve is obvious as the church is covered in beautiful and interesting sculptures.

The link above is to a page where each of the corbels, lintels window surrounds, capitals and other features has been photographed, and there are some extraordinary things to see.

There is a strong pagan feel to much of the work: The Green Man, Sheela Na Gig (a woman holding open her vagina), animals and trees of life are all evident and its a wonder that this little gem has survived the ravages of the Reformation, the Civil War and the Victorians, and remain almost totally intact for nearly 1000 years.
