A present from my friend Danny…

Belive it or not this gem is 40 years old.

Recorded as a spoof for an Italian TV show in 1972, the creator and star of this fantastic clip is the famous Italian singer, songwriter comedian and actor Adriano Celentano. From reading some of the comments on the YouTube page it seems it caused quite a stir in Italy, where Celentano’s clever use of gibberish and nonsense that sounded like English and was sung in an American accent, perfectly parodied the Italians love for singing along to English language pop songs, without having a clue what they meant…

And when you listen to the overall tune (the awesome music to which it has to be said, is something very special indeed for 1972) the lack of hearing anything that makes any sense, doesn’t matter in the slightest, especially when it’s sung and choreographed with such total conviction…

Genius indeed.. and the final fact with which to impress your friends… Ian Dury name checks Celentano in one of the best songs he ever wrote, Reasons to be Cheerful (Part 3) “John Coltrane’s soprano, Adi Celentano, Bonar Colleano”.. and it seems highly likely to me that Mr. Dury and his co-conspiritor Chaz Jankell, were tapping along to this very tune when they wrote those classic lines…

OLL RAIGHT…
